ZULTANITE GEMSTONE

When we talk about colour changing gemstone, Zultanite tops the list. It was first discovered in 1800 in Russian Urals and then in 1977 newer deposits were located in Turkish region near Anatolian mountains. This stone displays pleochroism quite distinctly and allows the buyer the pleasure of having different colours in a single crystal.

Zultanite, like Tanzanite, at present is found in single geographical region in the world and so earns lot of respect among rare gemstone collectors. It is truly a collector's delight as it has some very strong and unique characteristics that are normally not found in a gemstone. Firstly, it is mined around 4000 ft above sea level, then it gives the pleasure of being a multi-coloured gemstone owner to the buyer and last but not the least, it is confined to the single location in the world - all these factors put it apart from the horde.

Zultanite appears kiwi green in colour under natural daylight. It may emit yellow coloured rays occasionally. When held under very bright incandescent bulb, the colour falls close to that of champagne; and in very dim light, the hue is quite pink. Coloured gemstones with additional variations in hues are surely the collector's delight and anybody going crazy after them is natural.

Zultanite has now got the name 'gemme diaspora' because of strong backing from its most responsible promoter Murat Akgun who thinks the new name is better to trade. Ottoman Sultan, the Sultan of Turkey, was the original inspiration behind the name 'Zultanite'. Specific gravity of 3.39 and refractive index of 1.75 help it sparkle brilliantly and grants enough desirability to the jewellery pieces made from this unique gemstone. Zultanite is considered rare because of the fact that much of its matter is lost while shaping the raw thing to a crystal. Thus, poorer yield of gemstone from the specified quantity makes it a costly choice.

Zultanite is always compared with alexandrite when talked about rarity as both of these are actually not available so easily. On better comparison, zultanite is anytime rarer than alexandrite which has more number of deposits than the former. Zultanite is a stone with type II clarity and certain inclusions that are visible only under 10X magnification are not impurities actually but the part of stone formation process.
